Back to School Resolutions

Back-to-School Resolutions for this Year

Summer camp is over and moving into a new classroom may be on your child’s mind as we start a new school year. Even though your toddler or preschooler may not be changing schools when summer ends, some changes are in store for them as they learn and blossom into their next academic adventure.

With the excitement of back-to-school season comes big plans to organize and start it off right. We’ve come up with a few things you can do to keep the excitement and positive momentum going, beyond the first few weeks.

Promote independence.

Little ones still need our help and it’s probably easier to do it for them. But that won’t help them become self-sufficient, a critical skill for kindergarten. Let them try putting on their own shoes, sweeping the floor, or helping with the family pet. Resist the urge to un-do what they’ve done. It will help them learn to problem solve.

Establish routines.

Children learn and thrive on predictable routines. Young children do well in school because they know what to expect. Establish routines at home for school mornings and evenings and stick to them. Over time, they will become second nature and make for calmer and more relaxed family time.

Continue learning at home.

The learning doesn’t have to stop when the school day ends. Educational games and reading activities during the week set a positive example and complement what she is learning in school. It’s a great way to build skills and the emotional connection.
