A new word at breakfast. A determined attempt to use a spoon. A little hand reaching toward another child’s toy. Toddlerhood is full of moments that leave parents wondering, “How can I help them learn?”

Toddlers build communication, social skills and independence through repeated everyday experiences, play and patient guidance from caring adults. At Kiddie Academy® of Longwood–Lake Mary, our Discovering Me toddler program serves children ages 13–24 months, using the Life Essentials® curriculum to support each child’s individual development.

How Do Toddlers Learn to Communicate?

Communication starts before children can explain what they need in words. Our toddler curriculum supports that progression through baby sign language, modeled conversation and opportunities to name objects, repeat words and respond to questions.

Picture a child pointing toward a ball. An adult can give that gesture words: “Ball! You want the ball?” An everyday exchange becomes a chance to connect an object, a word and a meaning.

How Do Toddlers Begin Learning to Share?

Sharing takes practice—and handing over a favorite toy can feel like a very big ask.

At this age, the focus is on building the foundations: forming relationships, recognizing feelings and practicing ways to cope with frustration. Our toddler program supports these emerging social-emotional skills with caring guidance.

For example, an adult might acknowledge, “You wanted that truck,” and help a child find another activity while they wait. These moments offer opportunities to practice communication and being alongside others.

What Helps Toddlers Become More Independent?

Independence can begin with a small choice: “Would you like the red ball or the blue ball?”

Choosing between two objects, following a simple direction and learning to use utensils are all focus areas in our toddler curriculum. Each gives children opportunities to participate, try something for themselves and take pride in their progress.
