Building Confidence in Toddlers: Strategies Every Parent Should Know

Why Confidence Matters Early

Confidence is one of the most important qualities a child can develop during the toddler years. Confident toddlers are more willing to try new things, recover from setbacks, and engage with the world around them. The good news is that confidence is not something children are born with — it is built through everyday experiences and interactions, both at home and in childcare.

Let Them Try (and Struggle) on Their Own

It is tempting to jump in when your toddler struggles with a zipper or a puzzle, but allowing them to work through challenges builds resilience and self-assurance. Offer encouragement rather than solutions. Phrases like “You are working so hard!” and “I can see you are figuring it out!” reinforce effort over outcome and teach children that struggle is part of learning.

Offer Meaningful Choices

Giving toddlers age-appropriate choices — which shirt to wear, which book to read, which snack to have — helps them feel a sense of control and competence. Keep choices simple with two or three options, and respect their decision. This small act of autonomy builds decision-making skills and self-trust.

Celebrate Effort, Not Just Results

Instead of only praising finished products, acknowledge the process. “You used so many colors in that painting!” or “You kept trying even when it was hard!” teaches children that their effort is valuable regardless of the outcome. This growth mindset becomes the foundation for how they approach challenges throughout life.
