Separation Anxiety in Infants: Tips for a Smooth Daycare Transition

If your baby cries every time you try to leave them at daycare, you are not alone. Separation anxiety is a completely normal stage of development that typically begins around eight to ten months and can continue through the toddler years. While it can be heartbreaking for parents, it is actually a sign that your baby has formed a healthy attachment to you.

Understanding Why Separation Anxiety Happens

Around eight months, babies develop what psychologists call “object permanence” — the understanding that things and people continue to exist even when they cannot see them. Before this stage, out of sight really was out of mind. Now your baby knows you exist even when you leave the room, and they want you back. This cognitive leap is a positive sign of development, even though it can make drop-offs difficult.

Create a Consistent Drop-Off Routine

Babies and toddlers thrive on predictability. Establish a short, consistent goodbye routine that you follow every day. This might include a hug, a kiss, and a simple phrase like “I love you, I’ll be back after nap time.” Keep the goodbye brief and positive — lingering or showing visible distress can increase your child’s anxiety. At Kiddie Academy, our educators are experienced in welcoming children during drop-off with a comforting activity or favorite toy to ease the transition.

Build Familiarity Before the First Day

If possible, schedule a few short visits to the daycare before your child’s official start date. Let them explore the environment, meet the educators, and get used to the sights and sounds. This familiarity can significantly reduce anxiety when the first real day arrives. We encourage all new families at Kiddie Academy to schedule a tour and a transition visit.

Trust the Process

Most children adjust to daycare within two to four weeks. During this transition, trust your childcare team. Ask how your child is doing after you leave — in most cases, babies calm down within minutes of the parent’s departure. Our educators will keep you informed and share updates throughout the day so you can feel confident that your child is happy and safe.

You Are Not Alone

Separation anxiety is temporary, and with patience and consistency, both you and your baby will adjust.
