“I want to do it myself!”

If you have a young child, you’ve probably heard those words—sometimes while you’re trying to get everyone out the door. That determination is an opportunity to practice something new, whether it’s putting on shoes, choosing an activity or figuring out a tricky puzzle.

Preschool helps children build independence through everyday opportunities to make choices, practice routines, solve problems and communicate their needs—with educators nearby to guide them.

At Kiddie Academy® of Sanford–Heathrow, our preschool program for three-year-olds, I Can Do It, encourages independence, creativity and critical thinking through exploration and play.

How Do Small Choices Build Confidence?

An activity can begin with a simple decision: “Would you like to build with blocks or draw?”

Making a choice gives children a chance to recognize their interests and put an idea into action. They can decide what to create, which materials to try and when to take a different approach.

Confidence is one of the six outcomes supported by Kiddie Academy’s Life Essentials® curriculum, alongside Character, Curiosity, Connection, Critical Thinking and Creative Expression.

What Can Children Learn From Everyday Routines?

Putting materials away, washing hands and getting ready for the next activity offer opportunities to participate in the day.

Consider cleanup time. An adult might start with a manageable task: “Can you put these three blocks in the basket?” With practice, a child can take on more of the process.

These small responsibilities give children something concrete to accomplish. They also create opportunities to notice their contribution: “You put the blocks away. Now our space is ready for the next activity.”

How Does Play Encourage Problem-Solving?

A puzzle piece won’t fit. A block tower keeps falling. The pretend picnic needs more plates.

Play gives children reasons to pause, think and try another approach. Instead of immediately fixing the problem, an adult can ask, “What else could you try?”

That approach connects with our preschool program’s emphasis on critical thinking and discovery. The aim is to give children room to work through a challenge with encouragement and support.

Is Asking for Help Part of Independence?

Yes. Becoming more independent includes learning how to tell someone what you need.

“I need help opening this,” “Can I have a turn?” and “I don’t understand” are useful ways for children to speak up. Our preschool curriculum includes opportunities to ask questions, share ideas and develop communication through individual and small-group experiences.

How Can Families Encourage Independence at Home?

Choose one small task your child can practice without feeling rushed. Let them select between two outfits, put napkins on the table or return books to a shelf.

Offer help when needed and acknowledge the effort: “You kept trying until you figured it out!” Leave time for the process, even when doing it yourself would be quicker.
