How Do Babies Learn Through Play at Kiddie Academy® of St. Johns?
A baby hears a familiar song and turns toward the voice. Little fingers reach for a textured toy. A happy babble starts a back-and-forth exchange with a caring adult.
These small moments are full of discovery.
Babies learn through play by exploring with their senses, practicing movement and interacting with responsive adults. At Kiddie Academy® of St. Johns, our New Beginnings infant program, for children ages 6 weeks to 12 months, uses the Life Essentials® curriculum to support early development through personalized care and age-appropriate experiences.
How Do Songs and Conversations Support Early Communication?
Long before a first word, there are sounds, expressions and gestures to respond to.
Imagine a baby making a sound and an adult smiling, repeating it and pausing. That pause leaves room for another response—a tiny conversation without words.
Our infant curriculum includes talking, books, rhymes and opportunities to respond to sounds. These experiences introduce babies to language while making communication a shared, enjoyable part of the day.
What Can Babies Discover Through Sensory Play?
For a baby, an age-appropriate toy offers plenty to investigate. What does it feel like? Does it make a sound? What happens when it moves?
Our infant program includes sensory experiences that invite babies to explore their surroundings. Reaching for and grasping objects also connects with the curriculum’s focus on emerging hand-eye coordination. Activities are guided by each child’s development.
A simple way to picture this learning is a baby exploring a soft, textured book with an adult. There’s something to touch, an image to notice and a voice giving words to the experience.
Why Are Caring Relationships Part of Learning?
A familiar face and a warm response are important parts of an infant’s day. Our educators respond to babies’ signals and work with families to understand feeding, sleeping and diapering routines. That connection helps us provide care that reflects each child’s needs.
For parents, it also creates space for meaningful conversations: What comforts your baby? What has caught their attention lately? What are you noticing at home?
How Can Families Continue Playful Learning at Home?
Follow your baby’s interest during an ordinary moment together. Talk about a picture they’re looking at, sing a familiar song or respond to their sounds and expressions. Allow time for them to respond, too.
The goal is a shared experience, with room for your baby to explore at their own pace. That respect for individuality is central to Kiddie Academy’s approach to learning.
