Starting Preschool Strong: Helping Young Children Adjust to a New School Year

A new school year is exciting… but for young children, it can also bring a lot of change. New classrooms, new teachers, new friends and new routines can take some getting used to, even for children who have been in child care or preschool before. At Kiddie Academy of White Plains, we know that a successful transition isn’t about expecting children to walk into a new classroom without hesitation. It’s about giving them the time, consistency and support they need to feel safe, confident and connected.

Keep Goodbyes Loving and Consistent

For many families, morning drop-off is the hardest part of starting a new school year. A short, predictable goodbye routine can help children understand what to expect. Try a hug, a reassuring phrase such as, “Have a great day! I’ll see you after school,” and then allow your child’s teacher to help them transition into the classroom.  While it can be tempting to linger when your child is upset, a consistent goodbye often makes the transition easier over time.

Talk About What Will Happen

Young children thrive when their days feel predictable. Talk about school in simple, positive terms: “First we’ll drive to school, then you’ll see your teachers and friends. You’ll play, have lunch and rest, and then I’ll come back.” For children moving into a new classroom, remind them of the things that will stay familiar, too. They may have a new teacher or classroom, but many parts of their school day will feel just like they did before.

Give Children Time to Adjust

Every child handles transitions differently. Some children run into their new classroom on the first morning. Others need several days (or even a few weeks) to become completely comfortable. Both responses can be developmentally appropriate. You may also notice temporary changes at home. Children might be more tired, emotional or eager for extra attention after school. A new classroom requires children to process new routines, expectations, relationships and experiences throughout the day.

Create Calm Routines at Home

The beginning of the school year is a great time to return to consistent bedtime and morning routines. Adequate sleep, unhurried mornings and predictable schedules can make a significant difference in how children manage their school day. Whenever possible, leave a little extra time in the morning so everyone can start the day without feeling rushed.

Ask Specific Questions About Their Day

Instead of asking, “How was school?” try questions that are easier for young children to answer:

• “What made you laugh today?”
• “Who did you play with?”
• “What did you build or create?”
• “What was your favorite part of the day?”
• “Did you learn something new?”

These questions can help children begin sharing their school experiences while giving families a glimpse into what matters most to them.

Celebrate Growing Independence

A new school year often comes with new opportunities for independence. Depending on their age, children may be learning to put away their belongings, wash their hands independently, make choices, help clean up, serve themselves at mealtimes or solve small problems with friends. These everyday moments are important parts of early childhood learning. When families and teachers encourage children to try things for themselves, children begin developing confidence and a sense of capability.
