Throughout the month of June, our Character Essentials® theme is “We Are Leaders.” In the classroom, we encourage children to practice leadership skills such as taking charge, leading by example, or guiding others.
To extend these lessons at home, you can invite your child to take the lead in regular, everyday activities such as planning a meal for the family or even a small gathering. Together you can walk through the steps of brainstorming and delegating tasks, help them create a shopping list, and empower them to learn a new skill. You can also prioritize practicing communication skills, which might include:
- Helping your child become more comfortable speaking up in social settings by encouraging them to share their thoughts, needs, and ideas with others
- Teaching them how to greet others appropriately
- Encouraging them to practice ordering their own food in a restaurant
Some book recommendations that can help your child learn more about being a good leader include:
- “A Sweet Smell of Roses” by Angela Johnson
- “Grace for President” by Kelly DiPucchio
- “Imogene’s Last Stand” by Candace Fleming
- “The Ant and the Elephant” by Bill Peet
- “Being a Leader” by Robin Nelson
- “Dream Big, Little One” by Vashti Harrison
- “Little Blue Truck Leads the Way” by Alice Schertle
- “Swimmy” by Leo Lionni
