I love my job, I really do, but every once in a while, I’ll get that feeling again. You know what I’m talking about. The feeling where I just can’t possibly make it through one. More. day. Strangely enough, I noticed that this typically happens on Wednesday. When I told my co-worker about this during one of our weekly lunches out (I know, it’s an indulgence, but we deserve it!) she looked at me like I was nuts. “Hump Day,” she said, “of course it’s the worst day of the week.” Hump Day? What is Hump Day? And how was this a phenomenon that I had completely missed? I’m usually pretty up-to-date on my useless trivia, but Hump Day was a new one on me. So of course, it was Dr. Google to the rescue. According to my online sources, Hump Day is the hardest, “highest” day of the week. The day of the week the feels the longest, that stretches endlessly ahead of you, that means the week is not yet halfway over and you’re not yet almost to the weekend. That’s Hump Day.
Once I had the read on Wednesday, I started making some scientific observations to determine if Hump Day was as awful for other people as it was for me. I already knew that my kids were ten times more likely to drive me batty on Wednesdays, but whether that was their fault or mine was up for debate. So I decided to look more closely at how other people acted on Wednesday to see if it was just me. First, the morning coffee run. Normally, it takes me 4 minutes to get in and out of my local coffee shop with the first cup of the day. Today, Wednesday, 6 minutes. OK, not completely out of the ordinary, but what about the grocery store? Yes, on Wednesday I am more likely to choose the wrong line, find the item that won’t scan, be stuck behind the person paying with pennies. But I’ve come to accept it. Embrace it almost. Because the best part of Hump Day is that Thursday is right around the corner. And the best thing about Thursday is that it’s almost the weekend.
