We Are Unique is the theme of our Character Essentials® curriculum throughout February. During this time, we focus on recognizing each child’s individuality by teaching them about traits like creativity, talent, humor, self-esteem, and acceptance.
Extending these learnings outside the classroom is equally important, as it helps children learn to celebrate the differences that make them and others special as they grow. Here are some ways you can recognize the We Are Unique theme at home:
- Plan a mini family talent show night. Encourage everyone to participate and “show” or “tell” their special talents.
- Talk to your child about a topic they’re interested in or something they’d like to learn how to do. Decide together how you can go about learning more about the topic or skill. Suggestions include researching the Internet, visiting the library, planning to take a demo class, etc.
- Take time to expose your children to a variety of things. When children are given opportunities to experience new things, they will be able to figure out what they like and dislike. Try going to a variety of parks, community events, restaurants, and sporting events. When we encourage children to try and experience new things, we can find out more about them as individuals.
- Incorporate some Kiddie Academy®-approved resources, including:
-
- Helping Kids Find Their Inner Heroes (PBS Kids for Parents)
- Helping Our Children Love Their Differences (PBS Kids for Parents)
- “The Mixed-Up Chameleon” by Eric Carle
- “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andreae
