5 Ways to Help Your Child Learn Gift-Giving

In holiday gift guides, the emphasis is typically put on gifts to get others, but sometimes giving is the greatest gift of all.

While generosity and selflessness – possibly even love – are big concepts for little ones to grasp and fully understand, the art of gift-giving for young children should be about more than just opening presents. Kiddie Academy’s educational experts go over a few ways you can introduce the lessons of gift giving to your child this season in our 2016 Educational Gift Guide.

Here are some more tips to expand on the ideas mentioned in our gift guide:

  1. Homemade Gift Certificates: Almost everyone has experience crafting a homemade gift certificate for a parent with a little TLC. Help your kids creatively think of what their recipients really want for the holidays and craft gift certificates to address those wishes. Whether it’s a “coupon” for an hour of alone time or a gift certificate for cleaning the toy room, family gift certificates can be a thoughtful way to exchange gifts among family.
  2. Family Crafts: We’re really loving these DIY dinosaur succulent planters the whole family could help with and enjoy long after. Even these Melissa & Doug Paint Your Own Rubber Ducks could offer hours of fun crafting as a family with bathtime duckies to keep or give to your best pals!
  3. Allowance: Visit your local dollar store and help your children create gift baskets themed for each recipient. Here are six dollar store gift basket ideas under $10. This Dollar Store Beauty Bouquet could be a fun idea for grandma or mom. See if you can find all of the items needed for this movie night basket.
  4. Give Back: An easy way to give back this season is simply by shopping through Amazon Smile (smile.Amazon.com) to support a cause you care about. You can also give blood to the American Red Cross and take your kids with you while you sit. Become a mentor to a young child in need through Big Brothers, Big Sisters of America. Find another cause you and your family are passionate about and find ways to get involved during the holidays and after.
  5. Wrap Instead: Some kids aren’t quite ready to go shopping, but they might be able to help you in the wrapping process. Using this Scotch Pop-Up HandBand Tape Dispenser, even younger children can easily get in and help without worrying about how long the tape will be, if it’s sticking together or how it’s being cut.
