Fostering curiosity in young children at home is an important part of a child’s social-emotional development. By learning to uncover new information and enjoy the process of discovering new things, children are better able to develop strong cognitive skills and scientific thinking.
To keep curiosity thriving beyond the walls of the classroom, we encourage parents to engage in this fun, easy game:
Fall Foliage
Materials
- Leaves in various colors
- Magnifying glass
- Crayons
Directions
- Together with your child, collect leaves in red, yellow, orange, and brown colors
- Ask your child to sort the leaves based on color
- Using a magnifying glass, invite your child to explore the leaves close-up while asking them if they know what happens to leaves in the fall
- Teach them about how leaves change by referencing information from the following video: Why Do Leaves Change Colors in the Fall? | Biology for Kids | SciShow Kids
- Once finished with the lesson, invite your child to make leaf rubbings on paper by laying a piece of paper on a leaf and rub the side of a crayon on the paper over the leaf
- Together you can label the different parts of the leaf and create a fall-inspired work of art!
