When children are given the opportunity to create connections, it teaches them to communicate and develop strong social skills. This is why connection is such an important part of the Life Essentials® curriculum at Kiddie Academy®.
Fostering connection at home helps children truly thrive and feel a broader sense of belonging. Here is an activity you can do with your child at home to help them foster connection in a way that will make a lasting impression:
Friendship Wreath
Materials:
- Construction paper
- Miscellaneous art supplies (ribbon, pompoms, glitter, etc.)
- Magazines
- Markers and/or crayons
- Scissors
- Glue
Directions:
- Encourage your child to invite a friend or classmate over to create a friendship wreath together
- Trace their hands a few times on the construction paper using a marker or crayon and then help them cut them out
- Have the children personalize their handprints using whatever art supplies you already have on hand, as well as magazine cut outs that they feel represent them (e.g., a photo of a dog, an ice cream cone, a heart drawn in their favorite color)
- Encourage the children to talk about what they’re adding, asking questions like “is this your favorite color?” or “do you have a pet?” to learn more about each other
- Using glue, paste the handprints in the shape of a wreath
