Does owning a business mean kissing the holidays goodbye?

Time is often the one resource of which we can never have enough. For entrepreneurs who balance a household, a career, drop-off, pick-up, playdates, dinners, and everything in between — all within the very limited time span of 24 hours — it can be a challenge to spend time away from a business that relies on you. Or is it?

Entrepreneurs sometimes struggle with how much time to spend away from their business during the holiday season, and when they can comfortably “switch off” with phones and email when spending time with family (particularly while growing a business). But owning a business doesn’t mean entrepreneurs have to kiss the holidays goodbye. December doesn’t have to mean trading in sleigh bells, snow men, lights and latkes for holiday hustle, distraction and absence. Here are a few of Kiddie Academy’s tips for navigating business through the holidays…

Love what you do

When you love what you do, you love your business. When your business is the right fit for you and your family, you may not have holiday stress at all. Having the freedom as an entrepreneur to maintain your own, healthy work-life balance can help you reflect on your progress throughout the year and celebrate your achievements. If you love what you do, it will be nearly impossible to keep away from the business you live to love.

Find time for introspection

The holidays are a great time for introspection about what entrepreneurship means to you and the benefits of being your own boss. It is worth staying committed to a business that offers more flexibility for family time year-round, instead of just one holiday out of the year. Owning your own business makes it possible to spend time with family all year long, especially during the holidays. Consider all the reasons you got into your business.

Set expectations

We often hear the phrase, “I don’t make the rules; I just follow them!” You can still use that with your kids, but building and owning your own business means you get to set the rules. Entrepreneurs who set and “over-communicate” expectations for things like email response time, office closings and payment deadlines, will be more successful in taking time away from the business without ruffling any feathers.

Planning your December calendar can be stressful enough with gift-buying, tree-trimming and out-of-town guests, but owning your own company can actually mean less holiday stress with more freedom of time and money. This means more freedom to fully celebrate the things that are most important in life, and hopefully, there is another reason for you to celebrate this holiday season: you own your own business.
