The Life Essentials® curriculum at Kiddie Academy® uses thoughtful lessons and experiences to produce six outcomes: Character, Confidence, Curiosity, Connection, Critical Thinking, and Creative Expression. Each is intended to support children through stages of cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. While this might start in the classroom, it’s important that the curriculum transitions beyond the Academy walls and into everyday life, as this creates a foundation for successful, long-term growth.
Starting with the Character outcome, we’re rounding up experiences from the Life Essentials curriculum that can be done at home with your little ones. Keep reading to learn more!
The Friend Ship
Materials:
- “The Friend Ship” by Kat Yeh
- Brown paper bag and a white sheet of paper
- Markers
Directions:
- Cut the brown paper into the shape of a boat and the white paper into the shape of a sail and attach the two to create a ship
- Together with your child, read “The Friend Ship” by Kat Yeh. Ask them questions about the story and talk about the characters and their adventure to find friendship. Did the animals find friendship? Where did they find it?
- Invite your child to talk about friendship and what it means to them. Ask what it means to be a good friend, how it feels when someone is kind, and what friends do for each other.
- For younger children, record their answers for them by writing them down on the ship. For older children, invite them to write their answers on the ship themselves.
- Display The Friend Ship for your child to have a reminder of what it means to be a good friend.
